Measures of Joy believes that music is therapeutic, as it both relaxes and decreases anxiety. Many studies have proven that it is also beneficial to the physical and mental health of children, adolescents, adults, and especially seniors.
A 2003 study found that listening to classical music can decrease chronic osteoarthritis (OA) pain. This pain from OA, the most common form of arthritis, can affect senior's socialization levels, impair normal functioning, cause depression, or result in sleep deprivation. In the study, seniors aged 65 and older were divided into two groups. One group listened to Mozart for 20 minutes every morning for 14 days, while the control group sat quietly. Both groups recorded their pain ratings using the Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire, and the seniors that listened to Mozart each day reported significantly less pain than those in the control group.
Furthermore, a Case Western University study revealed that music can reduce chronic pain by up to 21%, and depression by 25%. The study also discovered that people who listen to music everyday for an hour showed decreased levels of negative physical and psychological symptoms.
We hope that Measures of Joy will allow our audiences to experience this music therapy.
